February 2012

                                                             Congratulations
Degrees
First: We would like to welcome Dwight Ash and Rob Brown as the newest members of our Council.  They became knights at the First Degree on January 30.  Make it a point to meet these gentlemen and welcome them into our Council.

Second:  On February 1, Dwight Ash, Rob Brown, and Juan Soto made their Second Degree.

Family/Knight of the Month
We honored Andy and Michelle Marini as our Family of Month for January and will honor Steve and Sylvia Chardos as the Family of the Month for February.  Tony Ferraraccio was selected as our Knight of the Month for January  and Eric Pelton will be honored as our Knight of the Month for the month of February.

Fundraiser - Friends of the Library Book Fair

As we reported last month, our Council will be working with Council 14079 on the Friends of the Library Book Fair.  This will be an opportunity to raise some funds for the Council and work with your brother knights and their families.  As you are probably aware we do very little fundraising, but we always have charitable events that we need to fund.  Please make a concerted effort to help out as much as you can.  If you look at the details below, it is obvious that we need a lot of help.  John Feurer has graciously volunteered to head up this project.  Please contact him at 598-1620 or jfeurer8@yahoo.com and let him know when you can work.

Here are the details.

Saturday February 18 (load  and unload) - The Friends of the Library(FOL) will need about 10 to 15 people to load 2 trucks with boxes of books(about 25 to 50 lbs each) at the down town Library, located at 1001 Broad St Chattanooga TN, starting at 08:00. If we get enough people it takes about 2 to 2.5 hours to load both trucks. We will probably drive one truck to Eastgate Mall (where the book sale is going to be held) where the FOL have a store room in which we will off load the books and place them by category in the room. We would need about 20 to 30 people at Eastgate Mall at about 10:00( we should have the first truck loaded at the library and delivered to Eastgate Mall by then) to help unload. It takes longer to unload and place in the store room than to load because the distance is longer. If we get enough people for both  locations we usually are finished by mid afternoon with this phase. This is fairly strenuous work especially for those in the trucks loading and unloading books. If you have a hand truck please bring it with you.

Friday February 24 (set up) - starting at 12:00 and going until we finish (last time about 18:00 if we get enough people) we could use about 30 to 40 people. The Knight's usually bring their wife and older children to help. During this time we will be setting up a number of tables with different book categories. Transporting boxes of these books from the store room to the tables and putting the books out on the tables and taking the empty boxes back to the store room. There are a number of different jobs of varying levels of physical difficulty. If you have a hand truck please bring it with you. Also the FOL has allowed the people helping with this setup the opportunity to have first pick of the books and materials for sale so come prepared to pay for anything that you find interesting.

Saturday February 25  - Monday March 05 FOL book sale.

Monday March 05  - At 18:00 FOL needs help packing up unsold books taking down the tables and accessories. Loading the unsold books, empty boxes, and other material on a truck to be taken to the down town library to be off loaded the next day. We could use about 30 to 40 people. The Knight's usually bring their wife and older children to help during this phase. There are a number of different jobs of varying levels of physical difficulty. If you have a hand truck please bring it with you. Normally we are done by 21:00 to 22:00 depending on the number of people and amount of books and material to be loaded.

Tuesday March 06- At 18:00 FOL needs help unloading the truck at the down town library we load the previous evening. We will place books and empty boxes back in the library store rooms.  We should have about 10 to 15 people and it usually takes about 1 to 1.5 hours depending on the number of people and the amount of books and things to unload. We must be done before the Library closes at 21:00.

February is Marriage Month

Celebrating the Sacrament & Commitment of Marriage

Bishop Stika will celebrate three bilingual Masses throughout our diocese this year in honor of the sacrament of marriage. Couples will have the opportunity to renew their vows during Mass and continue to celebrate with family and friends at a luncheon following the Mass. The Mass at St. Jude will take place on Saturday, February 11, 2012, at 11am. Register by Friday, February 3, and receive a certificate and photo with Bishop Stika. To register, call the parish office at 870-2386.  Fourth Degree Knights will comprise the honor guard for this event.

February Social Meeting

The Social Meeting for February will at 6:30pm on February 27 and will be a joint meeting with the Council of Catholic Women.  We have asked Paul and Karen Shultz, who will be presenting the "A Marriage Made in Heaven" marriage enrichment program at St. Jude, to speak.  A dinner will be served - we look forward to seeing you and your significant other there.

Health Promotion Program
The Tennessee State Council has added another program for fraternal year 2011-2012 - the Health Promotion Program.  They did not publish the Tennessee State Council Program Guide until after we has already done our program planning for this fraternal year, so now we have some catching up to do.  It would be great if we could get a Sir Knight to step forward and to be the director for  this program [NOTE this is a plea for help], but until one does your Deputy Grand Knight will do what he can.

I am offering two challenges to start off with.
1.  Biggest Loser Contest.  The winner (biggest loser) will be the knight who loses the highest percent of his weight during Lent.  Here's how it will work - On Ash Wednesday (Feb 22) mount the scale to get your starting weight.  Report this starting weight, along with the name of a witness, to me at rcooperiii@juno.com or 423-580-6829 (I hope that I will be able to give you the name of Health Program Director before then).  On Good Friday (Apr 6) repeat this procedure, weighing at the same time of day and dressed (or not) as you were on Ash Wednesday and report this weight and witness name as you did on Ash Wednesday.  Be thinking of an appropriate way to honor our Biggest Loser and submit to me.

2.  Bicycle Challenge.  I am challenging any and all two man tag teams to ride their bicycles farther than I can.  In the unlikely event that a team can do this, I will provide adult refreshments after three business meetings.

Experts agree the key to healthy eating is the time-tested advice of balance, variety and moderation. In short, that means eating a wide variety of foods without getting too many calories or too much of any one nutrient. These 10 tips can help you follow that advice while still enjoying the foods you eat.  I will include one tip each month in the newsletter.

Eat a variety of nutrient-rich foods. You need more than 40 different nutrients for good health, and no single food supplies them all. Your daily food selection should include bread and other whole-grain products; fruits; vegetables; dairy products; and meat, poultry, fish and other protein foods. How much you should eat depends on your calorie needs. Use the Food Guide Pyramid (http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/Fpyr/pmap.htm) and the Nutrition Facts panel on food labels as handy references.
